The NIH has a NIH Pathway to Independence (PI) Award (K99/R00 Award) (See http://www.nlm.nih.gov/ep/pathway.html) The PI award program is designed to facilitate a timely transition from a mentored postdoctoral research position to a stable independent tenure-track or equivalent research position with independent NIH or other independent research support at an earlier stage than is currently the norm. It is anticipated that 150 to 200 competing PI awards will be issued for this program in each fiscal year.

Dana Foundation
The Dana Foundation (http://www.dana.org) sponsors research in brain and neuro-immunoimaging, clinical neuroscience research, human immunology and neuroimmunology. Grants are usually for up to $200,000 for up to 3 years. After a preliminary review of a short proposal, approved by the host institution, full grants are usually due each year in May. Only applicants who have not received an RO1 before are eligible.

1. Pre-doctoral fellowship (Affiliates: Greater Midwest, Pacific, Heartland)
• Trainee Stipend: Yes, $20,000 per year, plus up to an additional $1,000 for health benefits; institution may supplement stipend • Project Support: Yes, up to $3,000/yr • Fringe Benefits: Yes, at the standard institutional rate not to exceed 5 percent (included in the $20,000 stipend) • Indirect Costs: No • Dependent Allowance: No • Tuition: No • Maximum Annual Amount: $24,000 Award Duration One to two years; for third year must reapply for competitive review.
2. Post-doctoral fellowship (Affiliates: Greater Midwest, Pacific, Heartland)
• Trainee Stipend: Yes, commensurate with years of postdoctoral research and clinical experience at time of activation; stipend totals represent combined salaries and fringe benefits. Plus, up to an additional $1,000 may be used for health benefits. 0 years =$36,996 1 year = $38,976 2 years = $41,796 3 years = $43,428 • Project Support: Yes, up to $4,000/yr, in addition to stipend • Indirect Costs: No • Dependent Allowance: No • Tuition: No • Maximum Annual Amount: Ranges from $41,996-$48,428 Award Duration Two or three years. 3. Beginning grant in aid (Heartland, Pacific)

Project-related expenses, such as salaries of essential technical personnel, supplies, equipment, volunteer subject costs, publication costs, travel not to exceed $2,000/yr • Indirect Costs: Yes, 10 percent ($6,500) • Maximum Annual Amount: $71,500
Award Duration Two years; for third year, reapply for competitive review.
4. Scientist Development Grant (Greater Midwest, Heartland)
Eligible - Junior faculty
Budget/Annual Award Amount • PI Salary/Fringe: Yes, up to $35,000/yr • Project Support: Yes, at least $35,000 per year (all of award may be budgeted for project support and 10 percent indirect costs if PI salary/fringe are not requested) • Indirect Costs: Yes, not to exceed 10 percent ($7,000/yr) • Maximum Annual Amount: $77,000 ($70,000 direct + 10 percent indirect costs)

5. Grant-in-aid (Affiliates: Greater Midwest, Pacific, Heartland)
Target: Established faculty investigators

Up to $30,000/yr may be budgeted • Project Support: Yes, project-related expenses, such as salaries of essential technical personnel, supplies, equipment, volunteer subject costs, publication costs • Indirect Costs: Yes, 10 percent institutional (up to $6,000/yr) • Travel Costs: Yes, $2,000 to present at a meeting • Maximum Annual Amount: $66,000 ($60,000 + 10 percent indirect costs) Award Duration Two years
6. Established Investigator Award (National AHA)
Eligibility • M.D., Ph.D., D.O. or equivalent doctoral degree at application • Applicants must be faculty/staff members. • At the time of award activation, the investigator must be at least four nine (9) years (i.e., eight years and 12 months) since the first faculty/assistant professor level or equivalent (including, but not limited to, research scientist, staff scientist, etc.). Instructor positions (or equivalent toward the four or nine years of eligibility • Must meet institutional requirements for grant submission at time • Applicant must have current national-level funding as a principal grant or its equivalent (e.g., VA Merit Award, NSF Grant, or PI on NIH "K" series awards are not considered equivalent to RO1.
Budget Items/Annual Award Amount

• Project Support: Yes, unrestricted in accordance with institutional and AHA policies
• Indirect Costs: Yes, not to exceed 10 percent ($9,091 included in annual amount)
• Maximum Annual Amount: $100,000 (including up to 10 percent indirect costs)
Allowable budget items are: principal investigator's salary and fringe benefits, salaries of technical personnel essential to the conduct of the project, supplies, equipment, travel, volunteer subject costs, animals, and publication costs. No minimum effort requirement. Collaborating investigators shall not receive salary from project funds. Other participants with faculty appointments are not permitted to receive salary from project funds. Special consultative services from individuals may be requested, provided the circumstances are fully described in the application. Award Duration Five years; these awards are non-renewable.
Trauma Research
Department of Defense
The Department of Defense has a new initiative for TBI and PTSD. For fiscal year 2007, they have allocated $150 million for TBI and an equal amount for PTSD. These numbers are expected to increase in forthcoming years. Although much of this money is for provision of clinical services, there is a significant component dedicated to research. Muscular Dystrophy Foundation

MDA supports research aimed at developing treatments for the muscular dystrophies and related diseases of the neuromuscular system. These are the muscular dystrophies (among which are Duchenne and Becker); motor neuron diseases (including ALS and SMA); the peripheral nerve disorders (CMT and Friedreich's ataxia); inflammatory myopathies; disorders of the neuromuscular junction; metabolic diseases of muscle as well as other myopathies. To be eligible to apply for an MDA research grant, an applicant must:
- Hold a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) or equivalent degree (i.e. D.O.);
- Be a professional or faculty member (Professor, Associate Professor or Assistant Professor) at an appropriate educational, medical or research institution;
- Be qualified to conduct and mentor a program of original research within their own laboratory;
- Assume both administrative and financial responsibility for the grant; and
Have access to institutional resources necessary to conduct the proposed research project. Funding levels for primary Research Grants are unlimited. Development grants are a maximum of $45,000 per year. Overhead is limited to a maximum of 10% percent of direct costs to be included in the total amount of the grant request.
